TEHRAN - A number of top Iranian clerics have expressed concern over the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran late on Saturday by angry protesters, calling it an act that will harm the interests of the Islamic Republic.
The attack was out of line with the expediency of Iran, Judiciary chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani said on Monday, Mehr reported.
In another part of his speech he condemned Saudi Arabia’s execution of outspoken critic Nimr al-Nimr, stressing that by doing so, Riyadh has triggered its own downfall.
Also, Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi denounced the Saudi regime for execution of Nimr, underlining that Nimr’s death will not be forgotten.
He also rebuked the protestors for attacking the Saudi embassy, stating that the attack was “abominable”.
Justice Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi also condemned the attack.
Pointing to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s warnings against infiltration, Pourmohammadi said the attack might have been supported and carried out by enemies as an attempt for infiltration.
